For Big Apple city dwellers trying to escape the summer’s ruthless heat, the perfect getaway is close to home. While most of the herd flocks to the Hamptons we recommend heading somewhere less known and underrated. Located proudly on the Jersey Shore, Asbury Park has re-established itself as a summer hotspot after recovering from the storm of the century, Hurricane Sandy. Stronger than the storm, this city is back and better than ever!
One of the most favorite and respected spots in Asbury Park is the historic Stone Pony. This music venue gave birth to many musicians including New Jersey native Bruce Springsteen who is said to make occasional appearances. You may also find him a few doors down grabbing a drink at the notorious Wonder Bar. See what upcoming shows are going down on their schedule.
When you find your stomach growling head across the street to Porta, an innovative pizzeria located in an old warehouse. Industrial light bulbs hang from the ceiling illuminating the wooden picnic style tables that fill the room. Handcrafted and bursting with flavor, their pizzas emerge from a turquoise ceramic oven. Our favorite is the Italian Stallion pizza with San Marzano tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, gorgonzola, sweet Italian sausage, and long hots. Check out the rest of their menu here.
There is nothing better than a farmers market on a Sunday so make your way to Kennedy Park sometime between 12 and 6pm to experience Asbury Fresh. Here you can purchase local produce and sustainable goods such as fresh brewed coffee, locally baked breads, handcrafted jewelry and more. A perfect way to end an ultimate weekend getaway with fresh food and local love. So forget about the bumper to bumper traffic to the “oh so fabulous” Hamptons and make your way to the Jersey Shore.
