The newest franchise to enter the winemaking business? HBO’s ever-popular Game of Thrones series. Wine has a prominent role on the show (we’d be drinking all the time, too, if we lived in the Seven Kingdoms), and now you can join in at home. An on-brand Chardonnay might just be the boost we need to finish binge-watching my way through the series.
Earlier this month, HBO announced a partnership with Vintage Wine Estates of California along with plans to release three GoT-branded wines: a Cabernet Sauvignon, a red blend, and a Chardonnay. Prices for these “Seven Kingdoms Wines” will be relatively affordable, ranging from $20-$40. They’ll be released next spring, just in time for season 7 – so you still have plenty of time to create a drinking game.
In a press release, Jeff Peters, the director of HBO’s retail endeavors, said, “an officially licensed wine for the show feels like a natural extension for our fans. Game of Thrones wines most definitely will add to the fan experience as the battle for the Iron Throne heats up heading into the final seasons.”
So, as you continue watching your favorite characters being tortured and killed, you can enjoy a glass (or four) of wine while sitting on your sofa.
If wine isn’t your thing, the brand also released a signature beer when the second season premiered, and there are currently several varieties available. HBO has a partnership with Cooperstown, New York Brewery Ommegang, and they brew everything from black stout to red ale in perfectly on-theme bottles.
And speaking of bottles, the packaging for the Seven Kingdoms Wines is on point. Beautiful golden details and signature GoT typeface makes these collector-worthy. So whether you’re a diehard fan or just a wino, “Everything’s better with some wine in the belly.”
