All About Avocado Beer

We don’t know about you, but we love knocking back a cold beer whenever we’re eating chips and guac. What’s better than pairing cool, creamy avocado with a refreshing brew? Maybe actually combining these two well-loved ingredients into one hoppy craft beer.

Several creative brewers have experimented with creating avocado-inspired beers over the last few years, as avocados have become increasingly popular. In 2013, Angel City Brewery in Los Angeles created a small batch of Avocado Ale for a local avocado festival. They pumped up the guacamole flavor with cilantro, red pepper, and lime, and used California avocados to create a light, refreshing beer. These brewers sweetened the ale with some avocado honey, which adds a dark and nutty flavor. Sadly, Avocado Ale isn’t currently available, but Angel City Brewery has a few other crazy cool flavors – we’re eyeing the Salted Caramel Gose and the Srirachelada ale.

In 2015, Bush Shack Brewery in Australia brewed avocado beer for an avocado festival in Perth. Brewer Daniel Wind created a lager using 66 pounds of avocados, though the beer didn’t really take on the flavor of avocado. Instead, it added a little bitterness and created a creamy finish. The beer was a hit, though it was a one-time thing for the brewery.

This year, a New Zealand-based craft brewing company is attempting their version of avocado beer for a trade show in February. They’re going with a saison for the base, light in color and peppery and fruity in taste. The brewery, Rocky Knob, is only making a small amount, but depending on how well its received, they might consider doing a seasonal release.

Island Brewing Company in California uses avocado honey to make a lightly sweet brew – another beer on this list that was created just for a local festival. This amber ale is available all year round, and has a lovely, smooth finish.

While we wish could whip up our own home brewed avocado beer, we do have a less time-consuming alternative. Check out this smooth and spicy beer-spiked cocktail.
